Hiking the Juan de Fuca Trail - May 2011 |

In the week of May 9th, your hosts, together with a group of friends, hiked the whole of the Juan de Fuca Trail in day trips (6.5 days) instead of the more common approach of backpacking with tents and sleeping at designated areas along the trail (5 days/nights).
With the help of the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail Guidebook "Giant Cedars, White Sands", we parked a car at the beginning and end of one section of the trail each day, and returned to our B & B at night to shower, drink wine, tell hiking stories, eat and sleep in the comfort of our beds, before starting all over again the next day.
The Juan de Fuca Trail is an ever-changing trail that meanders through forests of giant Western Hemlock, Red Cedar and Sitka Spruce, crosses a multitude of streams and waterfalls and opens up, often unexpectedly, to stunning views of the Juan de Fuca Strait. The trail was evidence of the record breaking rain fall we had in March and April. It was muddy and, at times, washed away but this was quickly forgotten by the scenic rewards around every bend; in fact it seemed to add zest to the stories at the end of each day. Along the way we encountered sea otters, bald eagles, harbour seals, and black bears with cubs that scooted away as soon as they heard us.
It was an amazing week that we will never forget. It has given us new appreciation for the west coast wilderness located in our own backyard and it has sealed some special friendships forever. |

Nathan and Sarah from Ottawa, left this morning with big smiles and the best souvenir of all.... a glistening 51-pound halibut caught the day before, right here at Otter Point, while out on a local fishing charter. It took their combined strength and skill to bring in the beautiful, fighting, prize halibut that was cooked and feasted on that same night.
The weather may not have been the best for this young couple's vacation, with cloudy skies and intermittent rain, but nothing could dampen their spirits after experiencing one of the most exciting of westcoast thrills. Nathan promised he would forward the photos as soon as he got back home, so stay tuned.
Thanks for sharing in the excitement, Nathan and Sarah, and enjoy the rest of your vacation in B. C. The forecast is for sunny days ahead.

Sooke at the 2010 Olympics |

The community of Sooke had a proud presence at the Olympic O-zone venue. Visitors to the O-zone walked through "BC Streets" where Sooke had a prominent display of the Sooke Basin and the newly-constructed boardwalk. Visitors "walked the boardwalk" while taking photos of a breeching Orca whale (locally designed and manufactured), sea urchins and wildlife (local artist) and a replica of the 40-pound spring salmon that won the Salmon Derby in 2009.
Community volunteers, including your bed and breakfast hosts, enthusiastically manned the booth and enticed visitors to come to the "real" Sooke (Wild by Nature) and experience the thrill of our west coast wilderness.
The big draw was the $7,500-prize for the On-line Contest at www.sooke2010.com consisting of a 7-day vacation in Sooke for 4 people including accommodation at Sooke Harbour Marina, whale watching, dinner at Sooke Harbour House, zip lining, kayaking and much, much more.
Just go to www.sooke2010.com and Enter to Win.
Here's to your next visit! |
